Here are some basic informations about Borzoi
Hunting sighthound, racing and coursing hound.
BRIEF HISTORY (summary)
These ancient breeds then migrated south (founding the Tazi/Saluki branch) and west (founding the Stepnaya, Krimskaya and Hortaya branches) to develop into breeds adapted to those regions. This was a slow process which happened naturally through normal spreading of trade, with the silk and spice trade via the Silk Road being the prime vector.
The more modern Psovaya Borzaya was founded on Stepnaya, Hortaya and the Ukrainian-Polish version of old Hort. There were also imports of western sight-dog breeds to add to the height and weight. It was crossed as well with the Russian Laika specifically and singularly to add resistance against northern cold and a longer and thicker coat than the southern sight-dogs were equipped with.
All of these foundation types - Tazi, Hortaya, Stepnaya, Krimskaya and Hort - already possessed the instincts and agility necessary for hunting and bringing down wolves.
The Psovoi was popular with the Tsars before the 1917 revolution. For centuries, Psovoi could not be purchased but only given as gifts from the Tsar. The most famous breeder was Grand Duke Nicholas Nicolaievich of Russia, who bred countless Psovoi at Perchino, his private estate.
The Russian concept of hunting trials was instituted during the era of the Tsars. As well as providing exciting sport, the tests were used for selecting borzoi breeding stock; only the quickest and most intelligent hunting dogs went on to produce progeny. For the aristocracy these trials were a well-organized ceremony, sometimes going on for days, with the borzoi accompanied by mounted hunters and Foxhounds on the Russian steppe. Hares and other small game were by far the most numerous kills, but the hunters especially loved to test their dogs on wolf. If a wolf was sighted, the hunter would release a team of two or three borzoi. The dogs would pursue the wolf, attack its neck from both sides, and hold it until the hunter arrived. The classical killing was by the human hunter with a knife. Wolf trials are still a regular part of the hunting diploma for all Russian sight-dog breeds of the relevant type, either singly or in pairs or triplets, in their native country.
In the 1917 Revolution, large numbers of native Psovoi were destroyed by the revolutionaries. The Tsars had turned them into a symbol of affluence and tyranny, and they were not welcomed into the new world of the Soviet Union. Some noblemen took it upon themselves to shoot their own dogs rather than allow them to fall into the hands of militants and be cruelly tortured. However, the Psovoi survived along with the other borzaya variants in the Russian countryside.
In the late 1940s a Soviet soldier named Constantin Esmont made detailed records of the various types of borzoi dogs he found in the Cossack villages.
- borzoi on above photo is from 1915 -
Esmont was concerned that the distinct types of borzaya were in danger of degenerating without a controlled system of breeding. He convinced the Soviet government that borzoi were a valuable asset to the hunters who supported the fur industry and henceforth, their breeding was officially regulated. To this day short-haired Hortaya Borzaya are highly valued hunting dogs on the steppes, while the long-haired Psovaya Borzaya, still carrying some of the stigma of its association with the old White Russia, has become more common as a decorative companion.
Exports of Borzoi to other countries were extremely rare during the Soviet era. However enough had been taken to England, Scandinavia, Western Europe and America in the late 19th century for the breed to establish itself outside its native country.

Here are some basic informations about Whippet
Whippets were bred to hunt by sight, coursing game in open areas at high speeds.
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN : England / United Kingdom
BRIEF HISTORY (summary)
One can find numerous representations of small greyhound-like hounds in art dating back to Roman times but the first written English use of the word "whippet" with regard to a type of dog was in 1610. The age of the modern whippet dawned in 1890 when the English Kennel Club granted the breed official recognition, thus making the whippet eligible for competition in dog shows, and commencing the recording of their pedigrees. In the United States, the whippet was recognized in 1888 by the American Kennel Club. Early specimens were taken from the race track by dog fanciers of the time and exported all over the world. The whippet's versatility as a hunting, racing, exhibition or companion dog soon made it one of the most popular of the sighthound breeds.
The Whippet is a gentle, patient, tolerant and affectionate dog. Although they are competitive when racing, they are adaptable and quiet dogs. They love people but prefer to stay away from very young children who may handle them roughly. At home in castle or cottage, they make ideal companions. They can be highly strung and need understanding from their owners.

HERE
*** *** ***
FCI Group : X. - Sighthounds
They were originally bred as sight, scent and sound dogs and today are used for hunting and as companions.
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN : Morocco / North Africa
BRIEF HISTORY (summary)
This breed is truly a living piece of history, revered by the Bedouin tribesmen, and as highly valued as an Arabian horse. In the days of the great Sheiks, the Sloughi was one of the most prized possessions, and you can imagine what happened if anyone should harm a Sloughi! They are as noble and proud as the Bedouin themselves, who decorate the Sloughi with talismans and amulets. Bedouin women have been known to nurse Sloughi puppies should the need arise. When a Bedouin goes visiting, his Sloughi is treated with the same respect as any honoured guest, and tribesmen will willingly give up their blanket for their Sloughi should they be cold. And when the Sloughi dies, the grief of the Bedouin is apparent and the hound is mourned with much dignity. There is evidence of the Sloughi dating back to the Ancient Egyptians, and indeed a mummified body of a Sloughi has been discovered in a tomb.
They are devoted to their family, therefore once you have a Sloughi, it is yours for life, they do not change homes easily. They are not a noisy hound, and like most hounds seem to have an affinity with children. They are independent dogs that have an inbuilt desire to hunt and have the stamina to keep going. Cats and other small animals are seen as prey to this dog that hasn't been socialised with them from an early age. Not a breed suited to someone who has little time.
The Sloughi should have a flat, fairly broad skull, with a wedge shaped muzzle. The skull and muzzle are roughly equal in length. The jaws should be strong with a complete scissor bite. The eyes should be triangular, slightly slanted, large and dark in colour. The ears should be triangular shaped and carried close to the head. The neck should be relatively long, strong and arched. The chest is not too broad and the topline is almost level and short. The front legs should be well muscled; the back legs should be long and well angulated. The feet should be thin, long and oval in shape. The tail should be thin with a curve at the end and is never carried above the topline. The coat should be short, tough and fine. The colours desired are cream, red, sand, fawn, with or without black mask, also brown mantle, and various brindle colourings. They must not be black or white, or parti-coloured. Or have any white on the body, such as saddle markings or collars. White is permissible on extremities or chest. This dog should cover the ground well and quickly with no apparent effort, the movement is free and flowing.

ADVANTAGES OF THE MARTINGALE COLLAR
is presenting you the advantages of, leather MartinGale collars
handmade by Petiit Pethaus.

The Martingale Collar is nothing new for sighthounds or similar like breeds (with thin, long necks and thin heads). Their thin, long necks and thin heads cause regular snap collars to slip right over the ears and off the head. This is where the Martingale Collar comes in! It is the perfect collar for sighthounds AND all other dog breeds.

- The loop design of the dog collar prevents it from slipping off the dog's head.
- The collar is much safer, preventing the dog from escaping and endangering himself or others.
- The collar is dog friendly and more humane. When the collar is connected to a lead, it closes around the actual diameter of the dog's neck. In this way, the closing of the collar does not restrict the dog's throat like a traditional choke chain, or pinch collar.

- The Martingale Collar is perfect for any sighthounds and many sporting and working breeds, from Tea-Cup dogs to very Large breeds.

- Most dogs respond to the Martingale better than with a choke collar. It never produces a choke hold the dog, but gently tightens to fit the dog's neck. There is no pain or constriction of any king to the dog if fitted properly.
- The collar remains in position on the dog's neck much better than traditional flat collar. Because of this position, most dogs will not pull and tug in front of the owner. It is much better collar for loose lead walking and training.
- A struggling dog cannot back out of this collar. If the dog is frightened by traffic or loud noises, trying to rear away from the frightening source, he/she cannot pull out of the Martingale Collar.
The collar is very effective when fitted according to manufacturer's specifications. The basic fitting method is to tighten correctly. When the smaller loop is pulled, two outer parts of the collar should join in the middle, fitting comfortably on the dog's neck.
