Here are some basic informations about Borzoi

FCI Group X. - Sighthounds
Hunting sighthound, racing and coursing hound.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN : Russia

BRIEF HISTORY (summary)
It was long thought that Saluki type sighthounds were originally brought to Russia from Byzantium in the south about the 9th and 10th centuries and again later by the Mongol invaders from the East. However, now that the archeological archives and research results of the former USSR are open to scientists, it has become quite clear that the primal sight-dog type evolved between the Kyrgyzstan, the lower Kazakhstan part of Altai and the Afghan plains, and that the earliest actual sight-dog breeds were the plains Afghans and the Kyrgyz Taigan.

These ancient breeds then migrated south (founding the Tazi/Saluki branch) and west (founding the Stepnaya, Krimskaya and Hortaya branches) to develop into breeds adapted to those regions. This was a slow process which happened naturally through normal spreading of trade, with the silk and spice trade via the Silk Road being the prime vector.

The more modern Psovaya Borzaya was founded on Stepnaya, Hortaya and the Ukrainian-Polish version of old Hort. There were also imports of western sight-dog breeds to add to the height and weight. It was crossed as well with the Russian Laika specifically and singularly to add resistance against northern cold and a longer and thicker coat than the southern sight-dogs were equipped with.

All of these foundation types - Tazi, Hortaya, Stepnaya, Krimskaya and Hort - already possessed the instincts and agility necessary for hunting and bringing down wolves.

The Psovoi was popular with the Tsars before the 1917 revolution. For centuries, Psovoi could not be purchased but only given as gifts from the Tsar. The most famous breeder was Grand Duke Nicholas Nicolaievich of Russia, who bred countless Psovoi at Perchino, his private estate.

The Russian concept of hunting trials was instituted during the era of the Tsars. As well as providing exciting sport, the tests were used for selecting borzoi breeding stock; only the quickest and most intelligent hunting dogs went on to produce progeny. For the aristocracy these trials were a well-organized ceremony, sometimes going on for days, with the borzoi accompanied by mounted hunters and Foxhounds on the Russian steppe. Hares and other small game were by far the most numerous kills, but the hunters especially loved to test their dogs on wolf. If a wolf was sighted, the hunter would release a team of two or three borzoi. The dogs would pursue the wolf, attack its neck from both sides, and hold it until the hunter arrived. The classical killing was by the human hunter with a knife. Wolf trials are still a regular part of the hunting diploma for all Russian sight-dog breeds of the relevant type, either singly or in pairs or triplets, in their native country.

In the 1917 Revolution, large numbers of native Psovoi were destroyed by the revolutionaries. The Tsars had turned them into a symbol of affluence and tyranny, and they were not welcomed into the new world of the Soviet Union. Some noblemen took it upon themselves to shoot their own dogs rather than allow them to fall into the hands of militants and be cruelly tortured. However, the Psovoi survived along with the other borzaya variants in the Russian countryside.

In the late 1940s a Soviet soldier named Constantin Esmont made detailed records of the various types of borzoi dogs he found in the Cossack villages.

- borzoi on above photo is from 1915 -

Esmont was concerned that the distinct types of borzaya were in danger of degenerating without a controlled system of breeding. He convinced the Soviet government that borzoi were a valuable asset to the hunters who supported the fur industry and henceforth, their breeding was officially regulated. To this day short-haired Hortaya Borzaya are highly valued hunting dogs on the steppes, while the long-haired Psovaya Borzaya, still carrying some of the stigma of its association with the old White Russia, has become more common as a decorative companion.

Exports of Borzoi to other countries were extremely rare during the Soviet era. However enough had been taken to England, Scandinavia, Western Europe and America in the late 19th century for the breed to establish itself outside its native country.

GENERAL CHARACTER AND TEMPERAMENT
These are good-natured, proud dogs and, despite their size, very gentle and calm in the house. They do not like intrusive strangers, being rather aloof, distant and even nervous. They will get on fairly well with children but do not like rough games and will not become their playmates. They will tolerate other dogs who are similarly-minded to themselves, although again they can be rather nervous of them, but they must be introduced to cats and other household pets at an early age as they will always react to the sight of a fleeing animal.

GENERAL APPEARANCE
The head should be long and lean with bones and principal veins easily seen. The occiput is very pronounced. The jaws are long, deep and powerful with a complete scissor bite. The eyes are almond-shaped and dark with an alert and intelligent expression. The ears are small and pointed. The neck should be slightly arched, reasonably long and well-muscled. The back should be rather bony and muscular, rising in a graceful curve with a well-balanced fallaway. The curve is more pronounced in dogs than bitches. The front legs should be straight and clean; the hind legs long and muscular with a well developed second thigh. The front feet are oval with the toes close together, well-arched with thick pads; the hindfeet are longer and less arched. The tail is long, low set, well-feathered and can be sickle- or sabre-shaped. It should not be carried over the back when the dog is in action. Any colour is allowed in the show ring.

Here are some basic informations about Deerhound

FCI Group X. - Sighthounds
They were originally bred for hunting deer, but today they are great companions.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN : Scotland / United Kingdom

BRIEF HISTORY (summary)
Shaggy haired hounds have been known to exist in Scotland since before the 16th century. It is thought that short-coated hounds were introduced to Britain before the Roman invasion. When these hunting dogs were used in the Scottish Highlands they were at a disadvantage because of their short coats. These hounds were then probably crossed with native hairy-coated dogs to get the Deerhound. They were used, in packs, by the Scottish Chieftans to hunt deer and had to be strong enough to pull a stag to the ground. When guns were introduced and the forests began to be cut down in the early 1700’s these dogs were no longer needed. Some were still kept but they did not become popular again until the 1830’s. They have not changed in appearance very much over the centuries and are still relatively few in number today.

GENERAL CHARACTER AND TEMPERAMENT
The Deerhound is a gentle, intelligent, friendly dog. They get on well with children but do not make particularly good guard dogs; they are not known to bark a lot. Most Deerhounds still have a very strong instinct to hunt so early introduction to other household pets, especially cats, is necessary.

GENERAL APPEARANCE
The Deerhound should have a long head, broad at the ears and tapering to the eyes, the muzzle tapers to the nose. The jaws should be strong and have a complete scissor bite. The eyes should be full and dark in colour with a soft look. The ears should be high set, small in size, folded back and semi erect. The neck should be very strong and quite long. The chest should be deep but not too narrow. The front legs should straight, broad and flat, the back legs should be broad, long and powerful. The feet should be firm and well knuckled. The tail should be long, slightly curved and be well covered with hair. It should almost reach the ground but should never be carried above the back. The coat should be shaggy but never woolly. The hair on the head, chest and stomach should be much softer than the hair on the body, neck and legs. The colours desired are self-colours in dark blue/grey, dark or light grey, brindle and yellow, sandy/red or red/fawn. Some white is allowed on the chest and toes, the less white the better.

Here are some basic informations about Boston Terrier

FCI Group IX. - Companion and Toy Dogs
They were originally bred as ratters, and it is thought even as fighting dogs, today they are mainly companion dogs.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN : U.S.A.

BRIEF HISTORY (summary)
The Boston was, in the 1800's, originally a cross between an English Bulldog and an English White Terrier. More crossbreedings were carried out and the Boston was further developed. This occurred around 1893. The breeds used for this further crossing were the English Bull Terrier, Boxer and the Pit Bull Terrier along with other terriers. Originally the Boston weighed over 20kgs but was bred smaller and smaller until they became the size we know them as today.

GENERAL CHARACTER AND TEMPERAMENT
The Boston is a lively and intelligent little dog that can be quite determined and strong willed. They are very good with children and make ideal house dogs. They can be quite boisterous and do love to play. Care must be taken that games are not too rough as they can be prone to injury, especially the eyes as they bulge out slightly. They do love human company and make affectionate pets. They also make excellent watch dogs, and are not yappy with it. If introduced to other household pets when young there will be no problems.

GENERAL APPEARANCE
The Boston is a small happy dog that can be a little boisterous at times. They have a short, square muzzle and a square skull. They are short coated and short tailed. The chest is not as deep as the other bull breeds that they have descended from. They have thin ears which stand erect at the corners of their flat skull. The thighs of this dog are strong and well muscled. They carry themselves with an impression of determination and strength. Their gait is one of ease and grace. The eyes of the Boston are quite prominent and bulging.

Here are some basic informations about White Swiss Shepherd dog

FCI Group I. - Sheep dogs and Cattle dogs
Family dog and working companion dog with friendly nature to children, attentive watchdog, cheerful and quick to learn.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN : Switzerland

BRIEF HISTORY (summary)
In USA and Canada the white shepherd dogs have gradually come to be accepted as a distinct breed. The first dogs of this breed were imported into Switzerland in the early 1970s. The American dog Lobo, whelped March 5, 1966, can be considered the proginator of the breed in Switzerland. The descendeants of that male registered with the Swiss Stud Book (LOS) and other white shepherd dogs imported from the US and Canada gradually multiplied. There now exists a large number of white shepherd dogs, purebred, over several generations, distributed throughout Europe. For that reason, since June 1991, these dogs have been registered as a new breed with the appendic of LOS.

GENERAL CHARACTER AND TEMPERAMENT
Lively, without nervousness, attentive and watchful; friendly to those he knows well, loyal and affectionate; easy to train and balanced; towards strangers aloof but not apprehensive or aggressive; approaches unknown environmental influences at first reserved/cautious, than inquisitive.

GENERAL APPAERANCE
A powerful, well-muscled, medium-sized, white shepherd dog with erect ears, double coat or long double coat; rectangular shape; medium-sized bone and elegant, harmonius-flowing outline.

Here are some basic informations about Whippet

FCI Group X. - Sighthounds
Whippets were bred to hunt by sight, coursing game in open areas at high speeds.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN : England / United Kingdom

BRIEF HISTORY (summary)
One can find numerous representations of small greyhound-like hounds in art dating back to Roman times but the first written English use of the word "whippet" with regard to a type of dog was in 1610. The age of the modern whippet dawned in 1890 when the English Kennel Club granted the breed official recognition, thus making the whippet eligible for competition in dog shows, and commencing the recording of their pedigrees. In the United States, the whippet was recognized in 1888 by the American Kennel Club. Early specimens were taken from the race track by dog fanciers of the time and exported all over the world. The whippet's versatility as a hunting, racing, exhibition or companion dog soon made it one of the most popular of the sighthound breeds.

GENERAL CHARACTER AND TEMPERAMENT
The Whippet is a gentle, patient, tolerant and affectionate dog. Although they are competitive when racing, they are adaptable and quiet dogs. They love people but prefer to stay away from very young children who may handle them roughly. At home in castle or cottage, they make ideal companions. They can be highly strung and need understanding from their owners.

GENERAL APPAERANCE
The Whippet should have a head which is long and lean, flat on top and tapering to the muzzle with a slight stop. The jaws should have a perfect scissor bite. The eyes should be bright with a lively expression. Ears are small, fine-textured and are described as rose-shaped. The neck should be long and well muscled, the body moderately long with a very deep chest and well sprung ribs. The loins should be well arched. The legs are long and strong, feet are neat with thick, strong pads. The tail should be long with no feathering and the coat is short, fine and dense. They come in a variety of colours and combinations of colours.
